This mimulus hybrid has been a very interesting and unfortunately rather public experiment, given that it is in the front garden. Planted in the fall, the first spring it bloomed the stems were so brittle that the paper boy was able to take out a branch every other day. I ended up cutting it to the ground. This past spring when new growth appeared I pinched it to about 8-10 inches. That seemed to help The paperboy still got in a few good shots but the plant seemed to bend, not break. I watered the mimulus this summer, 2004, and it rewarded me with blooms even into September.
