As of mid-June 2008, following a cold, dry spring, the Ribes sanguineum var. glutinosum which was so gorgeous with its pink blooms in the winter has begun to go dormant. For the Ribes the autumn begins in what most of us think of as summer and it begins its spring bloom in what we think of as autumn. It is a phase shift appropriate to a native plant coping with a long dry summer. No, I don't water it in the summer although I will hose the dust off the leaves every week or two in the dry season. |
